Singapore is a symbol of modernity, perseverance, and a union of Eastern heritage and today’s innovation. In the midst of this all parliament house of Singapore stands as the pillar on which today’s Singapore was built.

On 22nd of January 2016, the Global Learning Committee of SP Jain School of Global Management arranged a trip to the Singapore Parliament House to familiarize its GMBA and MGB students of the values and principles the place stands for. Our guides for the day were not only knowledgeable of the significance of the place but also enthusiastic in imparting their knowledge. The tour started with a meticulous and thorough security check, an example of Singaporean efficiency and thoroughness. It then led to a short video of Singapore’s political history. It showcased the clear strategy and vision of the father of the nation, the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. We had always heard how important Mr. Lee Kuan Yew has been in the growth of Singapore. But we now truly understood the significance of his contribution, during this trip to the parliament house.

Since coming back from winter vacation, the BBA 2014 batch spent their first student life event of the second semester at the Global Village in Dubai. Students was to meet and be briefed at the main entry gate at 5 PM. After having passed all the entry tickets, students proceeded to join the rest of the crowd entering the gate, which was an exceptional replica of the St. Basil cathedral in Russia. The students broke into different smaller groups and moved quickly to explore the different ‘corners of the world’. The park was filled not only with masses of different people from different countries, but with well-designed replicas of different national wonders and architecture celebrating the different cultures that were showcased. To mention a few, the Opera House of Sydney, the Taj Mahal of India, and the Eiffel tower of France. The park caters to all, as this tourist destination allocates big sectors for each country to hold different shop stalls.

The postgrad students were very excited and pumped with enthusiasm to visit the Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. Masdar City is a sustainable city located in Abu Dhabi which is known for its green buildings and for following highly efficient environmental standards which also houses the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Headquarters. The cohort began their trip on a pleasant rainy afternoon. After an hour and a half ride, the students reached the city of Abu Dhabi.

The students reached Masdar City on a chilly and gusty afternoon. The innovative and extraordinary structure of buildings awestruck the cohort and young business leaders could be seen trying to capture these moments by taking selfies. After a warm welcome from the representatives of the Masdar city, the cohort was taken through the timeline of the city and was explained about the chain of events that followed in establishing the Masdar City. The students also got a chance to use the digital artist platform where they got their creative juices flowing.

It is certainly a captivating experience to step out of the Singapore campus gate and mount the staircase which is positioned only a stone-throw away. So captivating, that for many of the students it was one of the first things students do, even before unpacking their bags, when they arrived here in Singapore.

The stairs give access to the canopy walk, which extend to the tree-top nature trail. At some point near the trail you can see the skyscrapers piercing the sky from between the tree canopy. What a juxtaposition! Singapore is a city of skyscrapers yes! But, undoubtedly, one of its most distinguishing features is its success at merging urban density into its clean, green, natural context. This is certainly a marvel of urban planning.
