Exploring Mumbai's Green Treasure: The Godrej Mangroves

On February 3, students from SP Jain School of Global Management's Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program explored the Godrej Mangroves, Mumbai's second largest green area. These mangroves, looked after by the Godrej Group, are known worldwide and highlight the coexistence of nature and industry. Additionally, they stand as a significant example of successfully combining environmental conservation with sustainable practices.

The Godrej Mangroves Forest, located on the west side of Thane Creek, is home to over 16 types of mangrove and mangrove-related plants, 13 varieties of crabs, 7 types of prawns, 20 species of fish, 76 types of butterflies, 206 species of birds, and a few mammals. It's a living example of the rich diversity that can thrive in nature.

Under the guidance of skilled professionals, students were split into smaller groups and led through a section of mangrove plantations thriving in their natural environment, allowing them to understand the adaptations of these ecosystems. After this, they explored a medicinal garden, where they were encouraged to ask questions and even taste and smell various fresh leaves like neem and citronella.

Following this immersive experience, they ascended a watchtower for a panoramic view of the expansive mangroves. To conclude the visit, the students observed live crabs by a natural river, gaining firsthand knowledge about the activities of fishermen and learning about the dynamics of high and low tides.

This educational experience not only deepened their understanding of environmental sustainability but also provided insights into the successful coexistence of industry and ecology.
