Art Walk in Mumbai – Experiencing luxury through the lens of art

 

Art and luxury have known to influence each other to create powerful experiences. To understand art as a concept in luxury, SP Jain School of Global Management organised an Art Walk in Mumbai for its Master in Global Luxury Goods & Services Management cohort on February 18, 2020.

Art and luxury have known to influence each other to create powerful experiences. To understand art as a concept in luxury, SP Jain School of Global Management organised an Art Walk in Mumbai for its Master in Global Luxury Goods & Services Management cohort on February 18, 2020.

The Luxury Management students, along with renowned artist Hansika Jethnani, toured the historic streets of South Mumbai to discover how art shapes, inspires and transforms luxury. The Art Walk also included a visit to some of the city’s iconic art galleries – Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, TARQ Gallery, Jhaveri Contemporary and Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke – showcasing different schools of Indian and international art. Here are some key takeaways:

  • The Frau Architekt and Tomorrow Land art gallery offered students an insight into how the mundane can be perceived differently by changing ones’ perspective
  • Vishwa Shroff’s Folly Measures focused on the idea of transience and impermanence through architectural sketches that unravel man’s relationship with space over a period of time
  • Jhaveri Contemporary helped students understand an artist’s thought process

The Art Walk gave the students a chance to experience Mumbai’s art spaces, learn more about contemporary art, and explore the evolution and intersection of art and luxury.

Sharing her experience of the visit, MGLuxM student Shweta Bose said, “The Art Walk helped us discover the relationship between art and luxury. It was a great experience celebrating women power in the field of architecture at Max Mueller, getting nostalgic with Chirodeep Chaudhari’s “Seeing Time” exhibition, and getting a reality check by learning how daily tasks can be beautifully converted into art by Vishwa Shroff at TARQ. The works of Vinod Balek at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke and Manisha Parekh at Jhaveri Contemporary were refreshing with a subtle undertone of the pressing issues of the modern world.”
