When I joined SP Jain Global’s Executive MBA program, I was looking for more than just another qualification. For me, pursuing an MBA had always been a personal goal—a chance to continue learning, challenge myself, and prepare for greater responsibilities in an ever-changing business environment.
Working in a multicultural setting in Dubai made me realise that learning should never stop. As industries evolve, so should we. I wanted to equip myself with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute at a higher level and broaden my perspective beyond my day-to-day responsibilities.
Another motivation behind pursuing an EMBA was my desire to break stereotypes. Filipinos are often associated with certain professions, but throughout my career, I have met many talented Filipinos who have excelled in leadership and management roles. I wanted to be part of that group and demonstrate that with the right opportunities and continuous learning, we can succeed in any field.
Why I chose SP Jain Global for my EMBA
Choosing SP Jain Global was an easy decision. I was looking for a reputable business school that offered not only strong academic foundations but also practical business insights and exposure to diverse viewpoints. I wanted an experience that would help me grow both professionally and personally, and SP Jain Global’s global outlook and approach to business education aligned perfectly with those aspirations. One of the most meaningful aspects of the EMBA journey has been the people I met along the way. As the only Filipino in my batch, I initially felt challenged. However, that challenge soon became one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. Learning alongside professionals from different countries, industries, and backgrounds exposed me to new ways of thinking and strengthened my ability to collaborate with people from diverse cultures. Through group assignments and discussions, I became more actively involved in team initiatives and grew increasingly confident in sharing my ideas. These experiences not only strengthened my communication skills but also highlighted the value of embracing diverse perspectives when solving problems and making decisions.
From execution to strategic thinking
The program also transformed the way I approach my work. Rather than focusing solely on execution, I began to appreciate the bigger picture. I learned to evaluate risks, consider long-term implications, and approach challenges strategically. This shift in thinking has enabled me to contribute more effectively during discussions with management and provide more meaningful input on business and operational matters.
Looking back, my professional journey itself has been unconventional. I started my career as a receptionist. Driven by curiosity and a willingness to learn, I volunteered whenever opportunities arose beyond my assigned role. Over time, this eagerness to expand my knowledge opened doors to new experiences and responsibilities, eventually leading me to my current position as Operations Manager with Nafud Shipping Co. Ltd. and Mirage and Beyond General Trading LLC in Dubai.
Applying my EMBA to real business challenges
Today, I am involved in a variety of projects, ranging from ship-owning activities to the establishment and operations of a manufacturing company in the United States. The knowledge and frameworks gained through the EMBA have helped me navigate these responsibilities with greater confidence and a more strategic mindset.
Among the many highlights of the program, one project stands out in particular—my Applied Business Research (ABR) titled "Innovative Shipping Strategies for Older Bulk Carrier Vessels (20 Years and Above): Enhancing Efficiency, Sustainability, and Operational Excellence."
What made this project especially meaningful was that it focused on one of our own vessels. As a relatively new ship owner, our company often relied on external consultants and technical experts. Through this research, I gained a deeper understanding of the operational, technical, and commercial challenges associated with aging vessels. More importantly, it gave me the confidence to independently assess recommendations, evaluate opportunities, and make more informed decisions.
The experience demonstrated the true value of the EMBA—bridging academic concepts with practical business challenges. It showed me how research and continuous learning can directly contribute to improving business performance and creating long-term value.
Lessons that go beyond the classroom
The EMBA has also helped me navigate new opportunities throughout my career. Whether evaluating business initiatives, improving processes, or supporting management decisions, I have found myself applying lessons from strategy, finance, operations, and leadership in real-life situations. The program has enabled me to think more critically, approach challenges systematically, and contribute beyond the boundaries of my role. Most importantly, the EMBA journey has reinforced a belief I have always held: learning is a lifelong process.
My advice to future EMBA students
For anyone considering an Executive MBA, my advice is simple—don't wait for the perfect time. There will always be competing priorities, work commitments, and personal responsibilities. But investing in yourself is one of the best decisions you can make. Looking back, pursuing an EMBA at SP Jain Global has been one of the most rewarding investments in my personal and professional development. It has broadened my perspective, strengthened my leadership capabilities, and given me the confidence to embrace new challenges and opportunities. The degree itself is valuable, but the knowledge, experiences, and relationships built along the way are what truly make the journey worthwhile. Those are the things that will continue to shape how I think, lead, and grow long after graduation.
