I began my 3rd year of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at the SP Jain London campus; a relatively new campus located near Canary Wharf.
A year later, when people approach me to know more about the London campus, I am reminded of the fascinating lessons and memories from the academic year.
One of those lessons was in a conversation with a professor. I remember having mentioned that I didn’t have a clear goal in mind, and that I have always been a confused individual that likes to go with the flow.
Hearing this, he questioned, “Well, is it clear to you that you are confused?”
“Yes”, I replied, and he said, “Then you aren’t confused, you are quite clear.”
This professor went on to teach me to use my confusion as curiosity, as a strength in academics and for future ventures.
Experiencing a different approach to learning
Choosing SP Jain London came with major changes in terms of professors, grading systems, and the overall environment that we were used to in years 1 and 2 at SP Jain Global. However, once I experienced being a student here for myself, I found these academic differences to be more insightful than I expected. I often found myself fascinated by what I was learning rather than studying “for grades”. We were not just studying examples of different marketing campaigns, instead we were designing detailed digital marketing plans for fictional scenarios of real brands. We were not just learning theoretical frameworks, but watching them play out in real brands.
The faculty at SP Jain London is also truly exceptional, with people who not only love the module that they teach but also take the time to understand each one of their students and find examples that relate the most to them.
Networking beyond the classroom
Further, at SP Jain Global, the first lesson we were taught was, “Your network is your net worth”, and in a city as vast and diverse as London, with a campus situated in Canary Wharf, networking is easier than ever. With a faculty that comes from so many different backgrounds, industry visits and guest speakers organised by the university, we were lucky enough to connect with some really insightful people and to learn from them.
A key networking moment was when I got to be a part of a guest speaker session on emotional intelligence by Smita Tharoor, where we analysed real-life scenarios from our recent days and discussed how the situations could’ve been dealt with better.
Studying in the heart of Canary Wharf
It is also extremely motivating to step out of class into an area like Canary Wharf where you are surrounded by professionals in multiple different fields from different backgrounds. An environment such as this is crucial in turning university students into young professionals.
At SP Jain London, the students are supported by a team that listens to us. Any suggestion we had were taken into account and then organised for us. This led to many fun experiences like musicals, obstacle courses, and sports events.
Looking back: How London shaped me
Having studied at both SP Jain Global and SP Jain London, I got the opportunity to explore multiple academic and business environments, and each one of those international surroundings have something new to offer. My mindset has developed so much in each academic year, going from networking, exploring new places, building my confidence, becoming a better speaker, to now in London where I’m learning to navigate my future decisions.
