Dr Thomas OH took a rather unusual journey in his studies and career. After spending 15 years from the conferring of his doctoral degree in immunology to post-doctoral virology research in Australia, Thomas left academia in 2017 and took up the role as a Medical Affair professional for a German-based healthcare company here in Singapore.
As someone with a strong scientific background, what led Dr. Thomas to take up a global education in business? How does he benefit from the SP Jain Executive MBA? Let’s find out.
Q. How has the SP Jain EMBA experience been for you so far?
Invigorating! The EMBA experience has been great and exactly what I had expected from a postgraduate business degree.
Q. You are a Scientist by profession and hence, are a ‘non-traditional’ candidate for an MBA. Why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am challenging the paradigm, aren’t I? I see no reason why a science background would stop someone from pursuing an EMBA. This hunger for additional commercial skills is pushing me forward. I am specialised in Medical & Scientific Affairs, a role that bridges the gap between industry and healthcare. However, my commercial skills and understanding are things that I lack as I venture deeper into the role where business acumen becomes increasingly essential. For me, an MBA is a perfect degree to complement my scientific expertise, helping me become the complete package.
Q. How was your admission experience at SP Jain like? How do you think your profile stood out from the rest?
The Admission process was well-coordinated, and it was a smooth sail, given the support from various teams. I think my profile stood out because I have a doctorate in science which is not a common sight for an EMBA program - I would like to believe that this made me stand out as an interesting classmate.
Q. How is SP Jain helping you excel in your MBA despite being from a non-traditional background?
The important resources at SP Jain for me would be the faculty and my peers. Good faculty can absolutely make a big difference in knowledge transfer and its application in the real world. The quality of my cohort has also supported me in this journey.
Q. You are currently studying in a classroom with professionals from different industries and career levels. How is this diversity helping your learning experience?
The diversity seen in my classroom helps to make learning very interesting. It opens my eyes to other industries I have no previous exposure to, and their views and comments are valuable to class learning.
Q. What do you plan to do after graduation? How is your time at SP Jain helping you build the skills to achieve your goals?
My EMBA was kindly sponsored by my company (Schulke & Mayr), so I am eager to contribute back to them. Using my credentials from my Executive MBA and together with my scientific expertise, I believe that I am in an excellent position to lead high-impact medical and scientific affairs initiatives in the Asia Pacific region (or globally). This will help us achieve higher goals and live up to our motto, “To protect lives world-wide”.

His exceptional capabilities landed him an on-campus recruitment in PwC India.
Describing his professional journey from a team player to a leader, he shared some insights of how SP Jain's GMBA program helped to shape his career and impact his future goals. Let's learn more about his journey.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What are some significant moments from your life that shaped you?
Currently, I work as a Senior Associate at PwC India, as part of the Advisory line of service in the GovTech space. I am proud to be part of prestigious projects serving the nation and solving important problems. In my opinion, I have always kept calm in pressure situations breaking the problem into smaller tasks. Having faith in oneself and trusting your team has helped me in playing the role of a team player and a future leader.
How did you find out about SP Jain’s GMBA? Why did you decide to enrol in it?
With over 3 years of work experience, I was looking for a premier institute that will provide me with global exposure, an opportunity to learn not only from the faculty but also from peers and enable me to enter the next phase of my career. A couple of my friends had already pursued their postgraduate studies at SP Jain, and they were the ones who introduced me to the GMBA program – the curriculum and program structure aligned perfectly with my expectations.
You spent your time at SP Jain with people from around the world. How did this impact you?
Having a diverse cohort enables you to understand people from different parts of the globe, their thought processes, cultures, and work environments. I believe SP Jain has a unique balance with its tri-city program for its students to imbibe the business culture of that region as well as to interact with people from different sections of the world. This helps in improving communication, exercising empathy towards others and a sense of acceptance of different perceptions.
How does life after SP Jain look like for you? What changes have you seen in yourself since graduation?
Life after SP Jain has helped me become confident as a person, enhanced my people skills and allowed me to work effectively towards life holistically. I was nervous during the initial phase of my MBA journey, but taking one step at a time helped me live in the present and face every challenge head-on. Currently working in the GovTech space makes me feel proud and happy to contribute to building this great nation.
SP Jain prepares students to become global leaders. How do you think the GMBA program at SP Jain opened a gateway for you?
I have always believed in the process of transition. To become a leader, it is very important to be a team player. SP Jain provided me with an opportunity to work with wonderful people in my cohort and being around such talented minds helped me shape my personality. The faculties who addressed us ensured we emerge as responsible individuals and not as mere students graduating with an MBA degree. The Global Learning activities, Industry Interface Projects, Student Board Room assignments and the various committees formed provide a platform for the students to work together and emerge as leaders. This allowed my cohort and me to expand our horizons and emerge as global leaders of the future.
What advice would you want to give students who want to take up a similar career path as yours? How can they make the best of their SP Jain journey so they are equipped for this career?
There are no shortcuts to success. Students should strive for excellence, participate in all activities, should have the ability to listen, enhance their skills and empathise with each other. Being positive is the most important factor in one’s overall development. If the student can keep a positive mind-set and come up with solutions, they will grow as individuals and succeed in their plans.
Meet Dr Nicolas Hamelin, SP Jain’s Associate Professor of Marketing and the Neuroscience Lab Director at our Sydney campus. So what does life look like for Dr Nicolas Hamelin, inside and outside the SPJ classroom? We caught up with him over a quick interview to find out.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Dr Hamelin: I enjoy Skying, Paragliding, Filming, and Tennis.
Q. What sort of morning routine do you have to get jazzed for class?
Dr Hamelin: I check the news about updates in the field.
Q. Could you tell us a fun fact about you? What would students be surprised to find out about you?
Dr Hamelin: I am an ex-television journalist and photojournalist, covering social issues in conflict zones (Filming child soldiers in Uganda, for example).
Q. If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?
Dr Hamelin: Don't cut corners - a diploma means nothing if you have no knowledge to back it up. Respect the planet, we only have one. Don’t let people buy your soul, do not drop your moral compass for a few dollars. Choose freedom and dignity over comfort.
Q. Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by?
Dr Hamelin: When someone needs help, help. This quote by Enrich Fromm inspires me: ‘Our goal should be to be much, not to have much.’
Q. Your favourite book or movie?
Dr Hamelin: My favourite movie would be ‘Captain Fantastic’ – it is a movie about freedom in the useless world of consumption. My favourite book is ‘1984’ by George Orwell.

At SP Jain, we believe that the skills you gain in your classroom are of little value unless you know how to apply them in the real world. Internships and live industry projects not only enhance classroom learning, but also allow students to test out their interests and develop long-term career plans. This is one of the main reasons why all the students of SP Jain’s Master of Global Luxury Management (MGLuxM) take up a mandatory 2-month internship or live project towards the end of their program, graduating with in-depth knowledge and expertise about the luxury industry.

Luckily, I was able to find a few job opportunities that put me on an interesting career path – product management. I know what you might be thinking. Is product management as interesting as I am portraying it to be? Honestly, it is!
Over the last few months, medical authorities around the world have warned us that people with low immunity and underlying diseases are more vulnerable to the novel coronavirus. But there are a few other conditions that are even more powerful indicators of who will survive the pandemic that most authorities have failed to highlight – the social and economic conditions of those affected.
Back when I started my career in the Life Insurance industry as a 20-year-old, I did not realise that I would be able to grow so much in just over half a decade even without a formal business degree. 6 years and 5 promotions later, I was heading a team of 20 Managers across 3 states, and realised that I might just have what it takes. A few years later, after a lot of morning classes, weekend preparations and with the help of some amazing faculty and administration, I managed to complete my Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) as well. This was going to be my entry ticket to the career of my dreams. My journey had just started.

When I first thought of investing in myself by pursuing an MBA, I was dreading the idea of getting back to school and preparing for exams. Once I mentally prepared myself for that, the next hurdle was finding a program that was friendly for full-time professionals and flexible enough to fit my busy schedule. SP Jain’s highly flexible weekend Executive MBA was a perfect fit for me.

Soon after his shore training, Mohit started his career and sailed onboard Oil Tankers. Considering his track record, it came as no surprise to anyone when he went from the role of a Deck Cadet (Trainee) to becoming the youngest Captain on a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) in just over a decade.
Mohit Deshpande (Master of Global Business, Class of 2019) was 18 years old when he represented India at the Global Youth Leadership Council in Washington DC and the United Nations Headquarters in New York. When both Vanity Fair and Vogue feature a brand among the world’s best, there’s not much left to the imagination about its success, right? Mysore Saree Udyog (MSU) might be a household name in southern India today, but during the brand’s launch back in 1932, my family had started it with the intention of manufacturing and supplying real gold threads, commonly known as Zari. Over the past 9 decades since its launch, we slowly expanded MSU into the manufacture and retail of authentic silk yarn and fabric, and the success of the brand today speaks for itself.
My entrepreneurial journey started around 8 years ago when I came to Singapore along with the other co-founders of our company to start Comm-IT Consultancy Services – an IT consulting firm. It was around the same time that I got accepted into the SP Jain Executive MBA program, and I could immediately see a difference in how I handled business. I used to apply the learnings from my class directly to the company operations, and we were soon able to expand our start-up to the other parts of ASEAN. One of the most important learnings from my MBA journey was that what matters is not what you think, but what your customers think. Design thinking may seem like a recent buzzword to many – but what people often do not know is that all successful businesses have been applying this concept forever.

According to Jobvite, a recruitment firm, 71% of people do not negotiate their salaries, leaving money on the table. Embracing discomfort is the first step to achieving the ‘not so usual’ results. Nothing meaningful was ever achieved by being comfortable. Trekking at 60-degree slopes on the mountains tirelessly requires determination, continuous focus on the summit, and motivation.
My personal experience with SP Jain’s luxury management program was one of a kind. The course is beautifully designed – while regular class attendance and participation helped me prepare well for assignments and examinations, our professors went out of their way to guide us even outside the classrooms. We had numerous international faculty who helped us gain niche expertise. Their tie-ups with local agencies also helped us a lot – right from finding accommodation to the Visa verification interviews. The made the cumbersome process of moving to a new country completely hassle-free.

A Master’s degree is often the defining juncture of one’s career, whereby the next foreseeable future is governed by this sheet of bonded paper. But, then again, what the world sees as a mere sheet of bonded paper is so much more to its holder. It is a symbol of all the experiences in that time spent to attain that degree. A symbol of all those sleepless nights spent either reading or dancing the night away. Remember the tenacious match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2008? Tennis fans caused a massive surge in electricity demand after Nadal took the Wimbledon title because they were glued to their seats during the epic match. The match was so intense that there were many deuce court serves, crisp baseline shots, elegant backhand shots, belligerent forehand winners and many claims for hawk-eye projections. So, the moments were dreadful for the line umpires. Weren’t they? Both players played at their best levels, yet Nadal proved too good for Federer. After the match, Federer and his coach wanted to perform the SWOT analysis. Hence, it is important to analyse the data diligently. This scenario is relevant not only for Federer but also for all the Professional Tennis players and their respective coaches.

My journey to the base camp started on January 11, 2018 – the day I was told that my profile had been shortlisted for placement at Google. Slowly, I geared my mind for the arduous climb. With a conversion rate of 0.2% for any candidate joining as a Noogler (new joinees at Google), this was going to be no easy task.
