Family Business 101: Far from being a necessary evil, business is a social contribution

In these times when ‘crony capitalism’ and ‘suit boot ki sarkar’ are terms that are easily bandied about, it is a common perception that business is all about greed, and businessmen are a selfish lot, looting the rest of us to fill their own coffers. I beg to differ. I contend that business is as noble an endeavour as any, and is, in fact, social work. Let me illustrate my point with a story.

Why is Virtual Reality hot for Venture Capitalists?

Why are Venture Capitalists (VC) bullish and heavily investing in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies? We can easily wind-up discussing this with just one case: we have all ‘heard’ of the Magic Leap that raised a staggering amount nearing $1.4 billion from some of the world’s biggest companies and well known venture firms. What is this technology? Why is its product in beta nowhere to be seen? The Wired Magazine called them ‘The World’s Most Secretive Start-Up’ in ‘The Untold Story of Magic Leap’. We can hardly guess the valuation of the company which is still doing R&D for their first product, launch of which, as some critics claim, is nowhere near. But the valuation is leading to a staggering $4.5 billion at the least.

THE ART OF NEGOTIATION: Negotiation V/S Marketing V/S Selling

In a business to consumer (B2C), negotiation is very different from marketing and selling. The primary difference is that Marketing is about making people aware of the product, services, or business, whereas Selling is to convince the other person to buy your product or service. Negotiation normally succeeds selling, because once a customer has agreed to buy the product or service, then issues about price, payment terms, delivery, quantity, and others will surface, which are negotiable.

What Will You Do When Robots & Watson Take Your Job? Design the Future and Redesign You

I just watched the YouTube video “Humans Need Not Apply.” After the initial let-down (boy do I feel useless – and apparently I soon will be), I had to stop & think. If 45% of human jobs will be replaced by bots (physical and virtual), and if that will happen in our lifetime — much more quickly than farm work was mechanized and craftsmen were replaced by factories — what should each of us do?

High paying tech jobs come with zero downtime- hit the ground running!

The tech sector offers some of the best-paying jobs, no discussions here. Various research agencies bring out average yearly salaries data like these: Software Architect – $120,000; Data Scientist – $110,000; Software Engineer / Java Developer / Mobile Developer – $98,000; and so on. These surface researches that utilise data from job postings hardly reflect details behind the high paying tech jobs and related figures. Many roles are not purely technical but are grouped into technical roles listing. Companies are hiring pre-post sales engineers along with other IT workers at a frantic pace. Some of the high in-demand positions are related to Cybersecurity, R, Julia, Hadoop, Scrum Master, DevOps, SAP HANA, Cassandra, Cloudera, OpenStack, CloudStack, Oculus, Chef, Pig, MapReduce, Puppet, the list is endless. These new-age skills reflect the shift from large firm’s software to mobile devices, cloud computing, and remote servers hosting. There might be temporary intrinsic trends like a Hadoop skilled will get higher compensation than Java or an iOS developer gets higher salaries than an Android developer. These intrinsic trends are mere demand and supply impact over a short time period.
