After nearly 30 years in the specialty chemicals industry, Dr Vinod Agnihotri took on a new challenge—earning a DBA at SP Jain School of Global Management. In this conversation, he reveals how the program sharpened his strategic thinking, strengthened his leadership, and reaffirmed his passion for lifelong learning.

1. With over two decades in the specialty chemicals industry, how did your professional experiences shape your decision to pursue a DBA?

With close to three decades in the specialty chemicals industry, my curiosity and desire to gain a deeper understanding of a subject that had long intrigued me led me to pursue a DBA. It was a personal challenge, fuelled by interest, self-persuasion, and a desire for intellectual growth.

2. How did the DBA program enhance your leadership capabilities and strategic thinking in a global business context?

The DBA program indeed helped develop my strategic and analytical thinking and broadened my perspective. It wasn’t about leadership titles but about enriching my ability to navigate complex business challenges with rational insight, discipline, and global context.

3. How would you describe the academic rigour and faculty support during your DBA journey at SP Jain Global?

The academic rigour was intense, demanding consistent effort and patience. Faculty support was vital—they challenged me while encouraging independent thinking. The expert guidance of my highly knowledgeable supervisor, along with the valuable support from other faculty members was instrumental in navigating the rigorous demands of my academic journey and transforming it into a deeply enriching and intellectually rewarding experience.

4. What does having a doctoral qualification mean to you at this stage in your career, personally and professionally?

At this stage in my career, the DBA is not a stepping stone but a milestone. It is not merely a progression, but a significant achievement. On a personal level, it reflects my dedication to perseverance and the pursuit of continuous learning. Professionally, it shows my strong commitment to deeper knowledge and thoughtful, values-driven leadership.

5. What advice would you offer to professionals considering the DBA program to maximise their learning and impact?

My recommendation is to pursue a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) not merely for the title, but for the opportunity to engage deeply with the learning process. It requires a high level of discipline, self-motivation, and critical reflection. The true value of the DBA lies in how one applies the insights gained rather than simply in the credential itself.
