Dr Hrant Davtyan, AI & Data Scientist, conducts an engaging session on data-driven decision making at SP Jain Dubai campus

As part of the ‘Global Thought Connect’ initiative for the month of October 2018, SP Jain School of Global Management conducted a guest session with Dr Hrant Davtyan, AI & Data Science Strategist from the American University of Armenia (AUA), at its Dubai campus where he spoke about the pitfalls of data-driven decision-making.

Dr Hrant Davtyan is an Assistant Professor of Data Science and Business Analytics at American University of Armenia. He is a PhD in Business and Economics from the European Academy and a holds a Master’s in Economics at International School of Economics. He is also the Head of R statistics department at ClinSoft and a Data Science Expert at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

While engaging with students, Dr Hrant Davtyan said, “Somebody, someday will do something that you have in mind with Artificial Intelligence and steal the market,” indicating that the world is rapidly changing with the advancements in Artificial Intelligence and what were once mere imaginations will soon become reality with the help of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Dr Davtyan also discussed the different kinds of bias and how it can affect a decision-making process. He said, “There is no correct way of making correct decisions, always learn to make wrong decisions.” He advised students to calculate the impact of their choices and weigh the consequences when they take risks in decision-making.

He concluded his session with a strong emphasis on the importance of keeping oneself updated and said, “For the business leaders of tomorrow it is very crucial to understand the current trends in the industry. Students should work on their programming skills to have an edge over the others after they graduate.”

The session organised by Dr Gulnara Karimova, Assistant Professor, and Ms Megna Kalvani, Senior Manager – Global Learning & Students Life, also provided students with a platform to get their queries about Data Science and Artificial Intelligence answered from the expert.
