Participants visit one of the best known ports of Malaysia

August 04, 2010

Benefitting from studying in Singapore and Dubai, which have the top re-distribution and re-exporting hubs worldwide, S P Jain Global MBA Participants of Logistics and Supply Chain specialization had this special opportunity to visit one of the best known ports of Malaysia - Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) along with their Professor - Dr. Rajiv Aserkar.

The visit started with an introduction presentation on Port of Tanjung Pelepas by Ms. Yasmin, Chairman, followed by an interaction session with the Participants.

Participants were very keen to know details like what were the initial challenges when this port started. Who are the different big players moved to this port. What are the daily volumes and maximum capacity of this port? How PTP competes with Singapore and what are the advantages PTP provides as compared to PSA? What kind of automation PTP provides to their customers? What are the next expansion plans? The interaction was filled with many interesting questions / topics. After the session, it was time to visit the port activities and a bus tour was organized to understand the layout and operations of the PTP port. The Participants were impressed with the systems in-place there and were really able to relate what they have learnt in their course curriculums.

Said the Chairman: "If you ever heard or seen the movie Transformer and the big machines in that, it's time to see them in action. It all here on our port working 24 by 7 and 365 days in a year"

Overall, it was a good learning and enriching experience for SP Jain Participants to know more about ports and authorities and about their day to day operations.

About PTP:

PTP is a port for container ships located on the eastern mouth of the Pulai River in south-western Johor, Malaysia. Receiving its maiden vessel on 10 October 1999 on a three-month trial operation, it set a world record as the fastest growing port with 1 million Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of containers handled after 571 days of operations. The good performance sealed the port's fate, and it was officially launched by then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, on 13 March 2000.

The current port offers 10 berths totaling 3.6 km of linear wharf length, and a 1.2 million square meters container yard which have over 156,000 TEU in storage space. The berths are serviced by 27 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes, 13 of which have a 22 box outreach and twin lift. The total capacity of the port today is over 8 million TEU per year. 77 rubber tyred gantry cranes operate around the container facility. The port has a naturally deep harbor with a draft of 15 - 19 meters, and its turning basin of 600 meters allows for ships of any size to turn easily.

Being part of Malaysia and availability of cost effective labor, electricity as well as fuel, the three major cost components of any port, PTP is know as to be upcoming top listed ports in the world.

Some of the big companies who are the direct customers of PTP are Maersk Lines, Evergreens, OOCL and CMA CGM.
