Raise Your Voice - empowering women - turned out to be a successful and inspirational event on April 9, 2011. The aim was to increase awareness in respect to various issues concerning today's women and empowering them to overcome these issues. The target audience notably comprised a young age group of 18-25 years (men and women).
The core committee members approached a number of women to come and address their views on various issues. The committee managed to gather an eminent bunch of women - Ms. Deborah Sawyer Managing Director and Country Head, Odgers Berndtsen Singapore, Ms. Pia Bruce, Executive Director, UNIFEM, Ms. Shoba Bhalla, CEO and Chief Editor, India Se magazine to name a few - well regarded in their respective societies.
The event was divided into two phases. The first half was partnering up with organizations such as UNIFEM and HOME who had sent their representatives to present on issues such as domestic abuse and domestic maid abuse respectively. The second half, on the other hand, involved getting influential business women to share their personal experiences through a panel discussion on women and business & leadership. The first half was quite emotional whereas the second half had everyone charged up!
The event had an enlightening workshop by Alesa Lightbourne, Professor, BBA Program, on "How to Raise Your Voice" against abuse. At the end of the program each individual in the audience was assigned a task of writing a pledge for women empowerment. Men and women from diverse cultures actively pledged for this cause.
There were two performances by our very own BBA girls' band along-with a poetry recital. A documentary on sex trafficking was displayed which touched many hearts.
The sponsors for the event were Body Shop and Aarkays Business Solutions, a leading consultancy firm from Dubai along with UNIFEM and media partner was India Se.
