External Examiner Paul Willman from London School of Economics visits S P Jain School of Global Management in Singapore

Paul Willman, Professor

Visiting examiner Paul Willman, Professor of Management from the London School of Economics, discussed the growth of the S P Jain School of Global Management during his visit to Singapore earlier this month. He said that improved rankings were the most important indicator of the quality of a specialized business school. He also cited its ability to attract and retain top faculty, and its ability to recruit talented students from around the world. Professor Willman lauded S P Jain for adapting curriculum to current global business and market needs. According to him, S P Jain's unique twin and tri- cities programs are an asset that keeps its education current.

Rankings
Referring to the Financial Times 2011 rankings of Business Education for Global MBAs, Professor Willman said, "Only ten universities in the United Kingdom rank ahead of the S P Jain School of Global Management. It will be fewer next year, closing the gap even more in the subsequent years." He pointed out that S P Jain ranked 68th from among thousands of schools worldwide, well ahead some very respectable schools including Purdue University, Boston College, Notre Dame, UC Davis, the University of Washington, Pepperdine University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He said, "Rankings these days don't just assess education institutions as whole. How an institution fairs in its areas of specializations or with a particular degree or a post-graduate program plays a critical part in the ranking surveys, which also include factors such as graduate job placements and subsequent career advancement."

Location, location, location.
Willman commented on S P Jain's location as one of its strengths. The Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern economic regions continue to grow despite the downturn in the US and Europe. This, he said, bodes well for S P Jain. "Partly because of demographics, and partly due to economic developments, the growth markets for S P Jain are all international and it's got an edge."

The virtuous cycle
Professor Willman praised S P Jain's faculty and cited the appointment of Mark Crosby as Dean of the Global MBA Program and Professor of Economics. Crosby is one of Australia's leading economists. He also mentioned that several of S P Jain faculty members have been sought after by universities around the world. Willman said that when faculty are lured away to higher positions, it speaks well of S P Jain. The quality of their faculty is recognized by other institutions. He observed that, "It's important that tertiary business institutions provide a high quality of academic rigor that is up-to-date to fulfill a growing demand for professionals, executives, managers, and business leaders with experience in complex decision making. S P Jain does just that."

Besides delivering quality instruction, stellar faculty attract stellar students who, in turn, stimulate intellectual interactions during lectures. This also helps the learning process. Thus, value adds to values and becomes a symbiosis of validation. Professors seek universities with talented students, and students seek universities with outstanding faculty. Willman said, "S P Jain has attracted academics and deans for its MBA and BBA programs from top universities from around the world for its Dubai and Singapore campuses. Visiting professors are equally accomplished, if not more. They are active leaders in various industries and specializations."

Global exposure and diversity
Another factor in S P Jain's success is its student diversity. The 2011 Global BBA cohort boasts students from 22 countries. Willman was pleased to see S P Jain progress in this area. He said, "It's very healthy and encouraging to see that besides the larger implication of doing business in a very globalized world, S P Jain's candidates are also well-entrenched in the more subtle nuances of social and work cultures and varying industry practices because of the diversity within the cohort and faculty."

Right time, right place, right vision
With quality faculty, quality students, a quality program of instruction, and three strategically located campuses, the S P Jain School of Global Management has become, not just successful, but an admired educational institution. No university in the world, to date, has accomplished such vast and globally-exposed parallel programs for students and faculty alike, spanning three culturally and spatially different regions.

S P Jain graduates are not only savvy professionals, but confident decision-makers. They are the finest testimony to the quality of S P Jain's business programs.
