On 15th August 2011, India celebrated its 65th Independence Day; and cultural committees of the April 2011 and November 2010 cohorts of S P Jain Dubai ensured that the batch did not miss out on the celebrations!
By 10:00 AM, the elaborately decorated auditorium began filling up with students who came dressed in elegant and colourful ethnic attire - the dress code for the day. Everyone sported a miniature flag pinned to their clothing and there was buzzing anticipation in the air. By 10:15 AM, the faculty members arrived and the proceedings were underway.
The occasion began with the national anthem followed by a video presentation by the members of the cultural committee. The presentation was essentially a montage based tribute to the accomplishments made by India since its Independence. The tone of the presentation was set right at the outset as the video began with the famous speech by the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru - Tryst with Destiny. The elaborate 10-minute video closed with A R Rahman's "Vande Mataram" and a resounding applause by the audience.
As the final act of the program, the more musically inclined gathered at the head of the auditorium for a more traditional rendition of the national song; it still carried a touch of innovation which began with brief guitar solos with the choir joining in full spirit later.
With that, the ceremony came to a close as sweets were distributed in true traditional style. The celebrations continued later in the evening with a dinner, dancing and a chance for the participants to have their outfits captured on camera!
