September 26th, 2011 – Michael Jackson didn’t rise from the dead, Phil Collins didn’t stage a comeback, it wasn’t The Police, Wham, or Blondie. Nobody’s going to mistake the student performers for David Bowie, Madonna, or even Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers. But the 80s were back at Open Mic Night at the S P Jain School of Global Management in Singapore, and even if the stars were missing, the fun was not.
Open Mic Night has become a tradition at S P Jain, where every semester kicks off with a welcoming student performance. The event not only showcases student talent, but cements bonds of friendship between the BBA students. And the fun was not limited to pop classics and dance routines – though there were plenty of both. Students also performed traditional folk songs and read regional poetry. There were even stand-up comedy routines.
But the clear-cut favorite was the routine delivered by the mismatched troopers calling themselves “The Misfits.” They performed a parody of “The Safety Dance” completely in character with make-up, costume, and dance, accompanied by the raucous cheers and applause of their classmates.
With fresh talent coming forward every semester, students embrace the fun and the cultural diversity to use Open Mic Night’s original entertainment as their unifying platform. The evening left students, faculty, and staff, with a pleasant buzz – a safe and healthy buzz, and not the kind packed in a can or a keg!
